Sterilization of unusual food products in pouches to fight malnutrition in Africa
Case study
Two years ago, a Steriflow autoclave helped fight devastating malnutrition in Burkina Faso. The nation has a strong crop of shea caterpillar larva that represent a major source of protein. This food was previously only available during and shortly after harvest. A barrier pouch can nowadays provide 12 to 18 months shelf life after sterilization at ambiant temperatures.
The food processor FasoPro is organizing the collection, packing and processing of caterpillar larva. It can be eaten whole, or ground into high protein powder and used as a food supplement.
The company invested in an autoclave system from Steriflow for the sterilization. Find the full article -> here <-
