Electrolytes: from pharmaceutical product to mass retail
A few years ago, “electrolytes” were still strongly associated with oral rehydration solutions and pharmacy-driven use cases. Today, the category is clearly shifting: bottled electrolyte beverages are becoming a mass market drink closer to functional water than to a “medical” product.
The global electrolyte drinks market is estimated at around 38B$ in 2024, different studies see this market double in 10 years. On our side, it’s tangible: we’ve recently sold two new production lines for electrolyte projects, one in Mexico and one in the USA.
The transition from a pharmaceutical product to a daily beverage isn’t just marketing. It’s also industrial. The producers have fewer constraints linked to the pharmaceutical sector standard such as specific norms, certifications etc. The Electrolyte production can easily increase at a better Return On Investment and the market is there!
Steriflow developed the cascading water process more than 50 years ago. Why is it the best process for bottled electrolytes?
- It aligns naturally with a vertical process (bottles stay upright, like on most beverage lines). The water can easily cascade along the bottles and assure the best heat transfer and homogeneity.
- Temperature uniformity: each basket receives high flow rate of water, ensuring a non-significant temperature difference between top and bottom.
- You do not need to “leave space between layers for heat transfer fluid to circulate,” you can typically run with very high loading density, helping maximize capacity per cycle and the Return On Investment of the line.
- Accurate controlled temperature: cooling by process water and not by cold external water avoids any thermal shocks for glass bottles
- Precise pressure control: independent of temperature, ensuring to control counter pressure and then allows to avoid any risk of leakage.
